Citizen
Situated at the boundary between Hwangseong Park and the urban center of Gyeongju, the Gyeongju Complex Cultural Library proposes an open public platform for citizens based on the concept of One Roof, One Community. The building broadly embraces the site, allowing the flow of the park to extend seamlessly into the interior programs. This continuity between landscape and architecture enables the library to accommodate a wide range of cultural activities and everyday civic life.
Void
At the heart of the library, a large circular outdoor space embodies the concept of void—an open field created through deliberate emptiness. This central courtyard accommodates a wide range of civic activities, from everyday rest, meditation, and family gatherings to outdoor reading events, book exchanges, cultural performances, and film screenings. At the same time, it functions as the spatial core that unifies the library’s internal programs. As a space of latent collectivity, the circular void symbolically expresses the public character and identity of the Gyeongju Complex Cultural Library.
Book
In contemporary society, knowledge no longer exists solely in the form of books, but is continuously reproduced through diverse media and experiences. Placing continuity at the core of its architectural concept, the library offers spaces where expanded forms of knowledge can be experienced, learned, and observed without rigid boundaries. Centered around a terraced reading space, the general reading areas are organically connected to various communal programs, allowing users to encounter the flow of knowledge through movement. The spatial rhythm created by the circular courtyard—alternating between tension and release—flexibly separates yet connects different zones. This continuous spatial articulation enables users of all ages, from children to adults, to occupy individual territories while remaining integrated within a shared field of knowledge.
